I need to write something about this book before my brain decided to store this rambling in my short term memory. And you know what it means – I’ll forget about it.
Bottom-line is, the book is forgettable. This book was my second choice, I really wanted Something like Fate by the same author but I couldn’t find a copy and the only one available is this book. So I settle for this one. I just finish Soul Screamers series first book, My Soul to Take (which is an incredible book btw). I need a break after that intensity and chick lit do that, just a good ‘ol teenage romance.
Sara is your average senior student who wanted to spend her last year in high school in a blast – good grades, successful college application and to have the perfect boyfriend. And she thinks that Dave is her dream guy – the hottest guy in school. So when he asked her out, she can believe that everything is starting fall into place. But after she got to know him, he wasn’t exactly the person she thought he’ll be. Now enter Tobey, punk, music lover who secretly loves Sara. And he decided that this year he will ask her out. But now that Dave is her boyfriend, is it too late for Tobey? (Of course not, you can smell the “happy ending” with this one).
Its catchy summary that initially drawn me to this book, this “I have a boyfriend but I feel the other guy is right one for me” that kind of theme. This book has wits and humor, I remember the corny joke by Dave about three guys who lost in the dessert. It was actually funny, corny but really funny. / (start of rant, just ignore for your own good) Also book like this shows me some cultural differences (in a good way, knowledge is power as they say) – the typical American high school scenario; like hall pass, bathroom pass and changing of classroom (for different subjects), the break time, the table thing (table for geeks, table for the popular crowd) etc. Here we don’t change classroom and my classmate are still the same until the end of the last period (heck until school year is over). Sometimes until you’ve graduated. Don’t you know that my classmates in elementary are still my classmates in high school. Yeah, I know, we see our selves hit puberty and pass the awkward stage. We eat in our classroom, and we can leave the classroom to go to bathroom without passes. When I was in college when don’t even need to ask permission to leave. Just leave if you want to, because professors don’t like interrupting the class because you need a bathroom break (end of rant)/. Cultural differences aside, I did enjoy the book. I really like how Tobey works hard to get Sara. Saving her from nasty jock and treat her special (besides from his sex theme illusion, he is pretty nice guy). I like those music tidbits. Dave is really a jerk when he tried to sabotage their performance, talented people are always misunderstood. This is another book that tells me high school popularity is shallow, just like Tobey said those geek/nerd are the ones who are successful in life (I totally agree with that). As for Sara, she realize that when fate decided to move its hand it will happen (hence the title). They found themselves as their own “something real.”
The story is actually ok. I did say it is forgettable but it is still a good read. I really love alternating point of view (just like Perfect Chemistry, I wanted to know what the other character thinks). Anyway, this is one of the reasons why I believe first impression never last and not every plan works. Sometimes you’ll just need to follow the flow; it might take you in the right path. This is a very light romance book there’s nothing to expect (than the already expected). Just like I said earlier, I wanted something light and that’s what this book is all about.
