Tuesday is for top ten list! Here’s mine!

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they will post a new Top Ten list  that bloggers will answer.

The topic for this week is: September 3: Top 10 Contemporary Books That Would Be Great Paired With A Required Reading Book (like Perks of Being A Wallflower with Catcher in the Rye) OR Top Ten Books That You Wish Were Taught In Schools.

It’s a pretty hard topic, the reason I’m not sure what this really means. But I’m going to take this topic literally so I’m going to pair contemporary books with books that were required to us read in school. That’s the same thing right? I’m still not sure how to do this.

1. Lord of the Flies by William Golding with The Forsaken by Lisa M. Stasse

They’re kinda share the same setting with kids abandoned in a secluded island and their lives were at stakes. Although the latter has political issues incorporated and it was set in a dystopian world.

2. The Giver by Lois Lowry with Matched by Ally Condie

For obvious reason since these books both deal with perfect and controlled society. Some readers even claimed that Ms. Condie borrowed the idea from Lois Lowry’s novel. But either way, I loved Matched (I have yet read The Giver but my sister was asked to read it for her English class.)

3.  When You Were Mine by Rebecca Serle with Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare

Isn’t it nice if we also give time to know the other and the first woman in Romeo’s life which is Rosaline?

4. A Long, Long Sleep by Anna Sheehan with The Sleeping Beauty by the Brothers Grimm

It’s a modernized and scifi-ish version of the fairytale classic. I really enjoyed A Long, Long Sleep, it has really interesting concept and very astounding plot twist. And it is sort of a retelling of the book so why not paired them up.

5. The Hollow by Jessica Verday with The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories by Washington Irving

I vividly remember this one because it is one of the stories (yes, this is a story and not a complete novel but most literary works that were required in our class are short stories like The Last Leaf by O. Henry part of The Trimmed Lamp and Other Stories among others) that I enjoyed plus we have to watch the movie starring Johnny Depp. Totally loved both!

And for the last remaining five books instead of the term ‘required’ I would like them to be called suggestive readings. When I was in high school I detest reading. You know why? Most books that were required in our English class were classics. They are hard to read and quite…boring (don’t tell it to my teacher). It would be fun if the books they let the students read are relevant and at the same time enjoyable. So here are the books that I think potentially good to be part of suggestive reading in academic class.

6.       The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzzane Collins (Socio-political issues)
7.       Leviathan Trilogy by Scott Westerfeld (History; although this one is set in an alternate world)
8.       Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan (Greek Mythology)
9.       The Survival Kit by Donna Freitas (Slice of Life)
10.     There You’ll Find Me by Jenny B. Jones (Slice of Life and Health issues)

Phew, I managed to post for this week and here I thought I am skipping this one due to the difficulty of this topic, haha.
