I don’t know if I should be grateful that I have this book loaded on my e-reader. Maybe I should be as it accompanied me the entire day saving me from complete boredom. With no electricity and no place to go, this kept me…busy. But I’ll probably more grateful if it was an entertaining book, but that should be asking too much…I suppose. At least it kept me company though I was disappointed that I have forced myself to finish it (I have no choice with the limited titles I have with me). I chose to read it ‘til the end than being bored. Better alternative, right?
Ok, I digress. The thing is I have all the intention of reading this book, I just keep on pushing it behind because I have more interesting title on my stack. Though I admit I was quite interested reading it because this is my first reading a book with incubus/succubus theme. And one out of many adult pnr titles that pique my curiosity. That must be saying something. And have you seen the cover, beautiful isn’t it?
But that’s all there is…expectations. The truth is the book was a complete letdown. I didn’t get much of the incubus story I was expecting. The beginning, yes, it hinted some of that but as the story progressed I have this feeling that it all left behind. Added to the fact that main character here, Callie McFay was a little out there. Even though I’m on my last pages I still don’t know how I feel about her. She narrates the story and that’s all there is. While the incubus who visits Callie on her sleep started well on me. I liked the eerie and sensuality his characters emitted. But sadly that feel started to fade when he became human. Though I admit I didn’t suspect him, it was only when something was happening with the student, and Callie manifested symptoms that an incubus was feeding on her. That was the time were things started to fall into place. But I just wish his character sustained the appeal, it could have held my attention to the story which admittedly wavered the whole time.
I don’t know if it’s bad thing or good thing that this book is not exclusively about incubus. In fact, fairies were more evident here than the incubus. I think (and if I remember correctly, sorry some things slipped through the cracks. Did I say I was inattentive when I read this one…there you go.) Callie has fey blood. It’s not something I expected and I love surprises but it is not serving it purpose on me. To me, the mixed of the different lore included this book (there are vampires too) had me confused.
I thought this book is…how should I put it…sensual? I mean it’s about incubus and they seduce woman. But it’s not. I don’t mean graphic sex scene (I mean if I wanted it I should’ve just picked erotica. But I’m no fan of the genre.) I just wanted something…mystifying? Sexy but not too much. I really wanted it to explore the mythological creature. But not only that it was limited, I was underwhelmed with what little it managed to include.
I don’t think I’ll read the sequel, it wasn’t really that bad but all the curiosity I have when I started vanished into thin air. And with no interest to continue there’s nothing to motivate me to read.
