Such bliss. I loved this feeling, getting things right at first try.

There are two reasons why I wanted to read this book. One, I want to read the prequel Etiquette & Espionage and the little OCD me (ok, not really) want things in order. I wanted to read this first so I don’t end up confused. And I hate being confused (because who does?) Secondly, I want to branch out, take a little detour from young adult. And this series seems to be the perfect one with my little experiment.

It is perfect, so glad to say that. I’m a little apprehensive at first since it was something I normally by pass in bookstore. Historical fiction? Adult? Not really my fancy. But about time to read one and I’m super lucky that I got it right the first time. I really enjoyed this book. Because what’s not to like? There’s romance, which really fits to my liking. Then there’s steampunk. And the characters? Superb. Miss Alexia Tarabotti and the Earl of Woolsey, Conell Maccon, they were great. Their rapport? Endlessly swooning here. Not only them, the other characters too. And the premise? Not really unique, I mean vampires and werewolves? not really new, no? But there’s something with Ms. Carriger magical writing that made it so refreshing to me. Particularly Alexia, she is soulless. Yes you’ve read it right, she has no soul. She’s a prenatural. And what’s that you ask? having no soul gives her the ability to cancel out supernatural traits by touching them. It was really an awesome, new idea. Haven’t read something like that before.

When I was reading the first few chapters, I was like what’s the big deal anyway if she was attacked (and killed it in the process) by a vampire. She’s just protecting herself, but remember her powers. I realized it was a big deal after reading the entire thing and it does makes sense. I loved how the author builds up the story and how it connects from point a to point b. She doesn’t throw things randomly because I get it. I can see the big picture. And you know what made me more excited? It has alchemy. There were homunculi! I’m not gonna say what’s that for, better read it yourself. But these are just the few surprises and there’s more along the way. I’m thoroughly entertained.

And btw, is it strange that I find the language funny at times? Not that I find it laughable, it just the way dialogues sounds so sophisticated (understandable though, it IS Victorian era) when what it really meant was so simple. (nether area?) I don’t have a problem like this in other books (ex. Leviathan) but for the record, it’s not something I take against the book. As a matter of fact, it was one of its charms.

Overall, I loved it! If you loved victoria era, steampunk and dashing, gorgeous earl you would definitely like this one. As for myself, I definitely will read Changeless!! <3
