My Favorite Bookworm Characters!
These awesome characters are also huge bookworms!
It’s nice to know when some of the characters I read have the same passion as I do. Especially if this character is a favorite of mine. It made them more appealing and interesting to me. One of those things that instantly piques my interest is when a character is also a bookworm. I am a bookworm; it’s nice to know that these characters I love also have an intense love for reading.
I was gathering characters I’ve read or watched, and sadly, it was only a few of them that I genuinely liked. Katy of the Lux series is a bookworm (and a book blogger at that). But I don’t feel her as much as a reader as I think she will. No offense, it just doesn’t feel like she is. Then my sister helped me with the list, but all her recommendations are for books I haven’t read yet. Then there are characters that I always see reading, like Kakashi (from Naruto), Nico Robin (from One Piece), and Kuroko Tetsuya (from Kuroko no Basket). But I decided to narrow it down to the top 3 characters that I think are awesome bookworms. And if you’re not a bookworm (random visitors, I’m talking to you), maybe their words on why they read may help you start picking up those books! :winks:
Shatter Me (Book Series) by Tahereh Mafi
Character: Juliette Ferrars
Favorite Books: No favorites are specifically mentioned (as far as I know or IIRC), as Juliette loved to read anything as a form of escape.
“I spent my life folded between the pages of books. In the absence of human relationships, I formed bonds with paper characters. I lived love and loss through stories threaded through history; I experienced adolescence by association. My world is one interwoven web of words, stringing limb to limb, bone to sinew, thoughts and images all together. I am a being comprised of letters, a character created by sentences, a figment of imagination formed through fiction.”
Juliette Ferrars – Shatter Me
Psycho-Pass (TV Anime Series) by Gen Urobuchi
Character: Shogo Makishima
Favorite Books: According to his wiki page (which reminds me I need to rewatch it and see him quote books again): he enjoys reading dystopian literature and Shakespeare and has thorough knowledge of the Christian Bible.*
“Books are not something that you just read words in. They’re also a tool to adjust your senses.”
Shogo Makishima – Psycho-Pass
Tokyo Ghoul (Manga Series) by Sui Ishida
Character: Ken Kaneki (special mention goes to Rize and Tsukiyama)
And lastly, my favorite bookworm of all is Tokyo Ghoul’s protagonist, Ken Kaneki (sequel, Haise Sasaki). And as a preface, if I haven’t recommended it enough, Tokyo Ghoul is a serious treat for everyone who loves emotional torture inflicted on themselves (am I scaring you?). It’s pretty obvious to me that the author, Sui Ishida, is a big literature fan as he made several references to books in his manga, like Kafka’s A Crossbreed and The Metamorphosis, Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris, and sometimes even mention actual books read by the characters, like Scarlet Letters by C.S. Lewis.
Ken Kaneki said it himself in his prominent quote in the entire series:
“I’m a college student who likes to read; you could find anywhere…I’m not the protagonist of a novel or anything. But if, for argument’s sake, you were to write a story with me in the lead role…it would certainly be a tragedy.”
He got this habit from his father, and the reason why is:
“When I followed the sentences in the books my father had been reading, it felt like I was having a conversation with my dead father. It was strangely calming.”
Ken Kaneki – Tokyo Ghoul
And that’s it. That’s my top 3 favorite bookworm characters! How about you? Do you have any favorite characters who are also bookworms like you? Care to share it with me?
