Mediocre? Underrated? Like I care, I enjoy it anyways!
I do go mainstream. No, scratch that, I tend to like very mainstream stuff… There’s a reason why they’re so popular; there’s something about them that connects them easily to their audience. But once in a while, I find some awesome entertainment in the form of an average kind of narrative. Nothing mind-blowing. Not really deep. It’s not even unconventional. It’s just a plain, plain story, and you know what? Sometimes the simplicity of it makes it an ideal read for me.
I’m the type of reader who scours the internet for her new reads. I rarely often get recommended books (I’m the one who does that!!) so I try to find my new reads. Hoping through forums, I sometimes stumble across titles on Twitter, based on generated recommendations from my last read and ones I see from online stores. I have a variety of ways to find a new read. But from those I chose to read, the majority are not mind-blowing. A lot of them are just okay reads. I mean, it’s not bad, it’s entertaining in some way, but I wouldn’t try and read it again (the re-read value is what makes it awesome, the higher the value, the better!) But reading something that’s not so heart-stomping sure is refreshing! How, you say? Didn’t I tell you that I read before I went to sleep? Yes? And the best reads are the simple ones; it just wraps up my day quite calmly.
Now, from my point of view, let me talk about the others. Some people think that the one you like, the one you actually consider highly entertaining, isn’t really! Like for example, ブラッククローバー. This title has been accused of being a rip-off, fake popular, and so on. But I guess the way it effectively integrated shonen tropes made it more refreshing to me. Sure, it isn’t like the almighty ワンピース level. But I like it, anyway; damn its mediocrity. Simple is not bad writing in and of itself.
I like the underrated one. The underdogs! It’s underground, and only the few know it! Sometimes the fandom gets carried away and, more often than not, ruins the experience of those who just like it! But sometimes there are series that aren’t in the spotlight but still shine like a beacon on a dark night! I’m such a selfish person that my opinion matters more than what everybody else thinks of it. If I find it entertaining amidst the criticism from everyone, I think it’s okay. I enjoy it, and that’s enough reason for me!
