Title: Hunger Games

Author: Suzanne Collins

Pages: 374

I’ve been reading a lot of good press about this book. From the cliché ‘it’s-a-great-book-must-read-it’ to ‘it-surpasses-Twilight-in -every-aspect.’ It was even compare to Battle Royale which I’m really familiar with (but I haven’t read the novel yet, I’m an otaku so I know just in case you’re wondering). With Battle Royale-esque and better than Twilight to back it up, I have got to read this book.

Hunger Games is no doubt a great book. I agree to the extent that it is better than Twilight (that says a lot because I’m a huge Twilight fan). This book by far the best book I have ever read. It was awesomely addicting I just keep reading it again and again, reliving the moment. And every time I do, I still have the same emotions the first time I read it. It was so good that is all worth the sleepless night. I read the three books in two days. That’s how engrossing it was. I just can’t put the book down once I started it (unless I really need to, you know the normal stuff). It’s a complete balance of everything – action, suspense, drama, romance, yes, even humor… just like I said – everything is in there. If you are the few people (yes few, because all I read are rave reviews) who didn’t like this, I am doubting your preferences because you didn’t see the awesomeness of this book.

It wasn’t really that violent, the fight was describe in a subtle (clever) manner. It is fast paced and well written so it was easy for me to read. But what got me hook to this book is Peeta, one of the tributes of District 12. Don’t get me wrong, I love Katniss but Peeta Mellark is the one that grows on me the most. I totally agree with this character analysis, Peeta is the most well balanced character in the book. And just like the article said the characters in HG series are either too strong or too vulnerable and Peeta posses both (makes him so perfect, well that is just me but I know a lot will agree ;D). And who wouldn’t fall in love with him? His dedication and selfless actions drawn readers like me. You just can’t help rooting for this boy. You want him to be happy.

Katniss is a great character too. She embodies what I like on female protagonist; a strong resolve with a good balance of vulnerability. But sometimes she ticks me off (when she sometimes blew off Peeta’s feeling). It was kinda insensitive. And sometimes she said absurd things like she just should have killed Peeta so she doesn’t face this problem (how heartless). But my negative feelings toward her are because of Peeta (so that was unfair) but that aside, she is great heroine.

Yes, it wasn’t the most original idea but I think the execution of story, the characters, the writing style is perfect. All books are out (which I am thankful for because I couldn’t wait to read the rest of the books). I don’t do recommendation but I’m giving myself some slack here. I totally suggest this book. It was a great book, no, awesome book. And it’s worth every peso (or whatever currency your country have). If you love it, you need to buy a copy, coz you’ll find yourself reading it again in the future.

PS

Although I already read Catching Fire and Mockingjay, I opted not to post about it. This entry serves a review to all three (I rated all of them with 5 stars).
