Heist Society by Ally Carter

Pages: 287
I have read one book (literally) of Ally Carter. And in all fairness to her, she has ideas that are very unique. If everyone is betting their writing to vampires and fairies (not that I hate either of them. I like it, mind you). Well, Ms. Carter decided to gamble more on the not-so supernatural stuff. Teenage spies and thieves, you don’t get that much on YA.
A foreword first, I commend the author for her very fantastic, if not, unique ideas. But there’s something that… I don’t know, not appealing to me. I like Gallagher Girl’s book one. But it wasn’t good enough for me to immediately dive in to the next book. Until now, they are still sitting in the bookshelf waiting for me to read. But that saying, no, it wasn’t terrible, not by a long stretch. In fact it was good, remarkable even. I’m not even sure how to explain but there’s something bland with the book (that was just me, ok?). Maybe the writing style… but come to think of it wasn’t either. Ugh, I don’t know. It’s just. Period.
Katarina Bishop was trying to live a normal life at Colgan when she was suspected of stealing the headmaster’s car. It turned out to be W.W. Hale V and he needs her help, actually it’s more of her dad needs help. He was accused of stealing famous paintings from a very evil guy. But her dad insisted that it wasn’t him. In fact, he had an alibi. He was doing another ‘job’ in Paris. But the owner, Arturo Taccone didn’t believe that it wasn’t her father and to top it all, he only gave her two weeks to return the paintings. To save her father she needs to go back to what her family does best — stealing.
Sorry for the long introduction. But I wanted to explain my point. Like the Gallagher Girls, I encountered the same problem with Heist Society. I was zoning out, embarrassing to say. The book is throwing a lot of stuff that got me confused. And it took me two (or three) days to finish it. That says a lot, because I can finish a book regardless of the number of pages if it was exciting, take Battle Royale as an example. But I’m not saying (though I could be with that description, lol) it was boring. I kinda like it, opposite to what I’m saying. I love retracting myself, what can say. *Sighs* Anyways, there are parts where I really like, particularly the time they are going to steal the paintings. It was awesome. I like Lupin III and Cat’s Eye, so with that in mind I was hoping it has the same level of excitement. It does, however it didn’t completely match with my references. Maybe this could be good if I watch in action rather imagining it. Perhaps, if it’s going to be a movie I’ll appreciate it even more.
Katarina was an excellent heroine. She’s strong and intelligent. If you’re too bored with helpless, the damsel in distress type then take Ally Carters books, because she nailed great heroines with substance. Kat is one of the things I like about the book. And Hale, the main guy… he was ok. Rich and good looking, all in one package, but taking my inconsistent preferences, I end up not liking him that much. Nope, I don’t hate him. He was actually nice, but felt something’s missing. Oh, well.
In general, it was a nice, refreshing book. There are parts that are for me, dreary, and there are also parts that I really enjoyed. It was ok, and I still, will read the second book when it’s out… here.
