Glitch was ok.
People in The Community live in a robotic society. They’re emotionless; they have chip implanted in them that manipulates them. But their system isn’t perfect, that is why Zoel is ‘glitching.’ A kind of malfunction where she finally regains human emotion, enable her to have thoughts of her own. And she’s not alone, there are group called Resistance (Rez in short), and Adrien a boy who saved her once was one of them. Max, her friend was also glitcher. Having emotions, thoughts back is not the only thing that made her different, she also possess gift. She has telekinesis. If that’s not enough burden, Adrien who has a gift of clairvoyance told her she’s the one that will lead the resistance.
What I like first: I admit the concept of the book was interesting. Emotionless human, and these people are connected through a system that feed them information. They’re like mechanical zombies—puppets. But once Zoe started having feelings, thoughts you can see how frightful a place where there’s no emotion. Where you’re not allowed to think for your own. I really liked when Zoe also thought about community’s reason why they did the system. She asked if it was better without it (emotions). I liked that she accepted these information by knowing both sides. Now, the resistance and the community are not the only groups in this book. It’s not black and white. There is also a group who thought of perfecting the system, led by the Chancellor. I find that an interesting angle of the story. Now, which side is right?
What I didn’t like: Max. First, I don’t think this one is a love triangle. Max definitely wants her. But in different sexual way. He’s quite selfish, who only thinks about him and Zoe’s welfare. It didn’t come as a surprise to me that he sell them out to the chancellor. It also irritated me whenever he hinted that he wanted to sleep with her. And some words/terms he used have double meanings ‘pleasurable dreams?’ I bet that’s wet dreams. It’s all about pleasure with this guy. And it’s kinda annoying to me. I thought he’ll have redeeming moment but nooooo, up until the end he acted like a douchebag.
Adrein was ok, I liked him actually. At least he has purpose; his character has purpose in the entire ordeal. No wonder Zoe fell for him. He could be her guide. I didn’t doubt him even after what he (unintentionally) did.
Overall, it was a good read. There were interesting parts—the good parts, and there were some (minimal, in all fairness) dull parts. Oh, some iffy parts too (let’s called them Max part…what? I don’t like the guy).! But as a whole? I liked it. 🙂
