You know I find it difficult to write a review (well, as much as possible I don’t like to refer my post as reviews, but for the sake of nothing else to coin for it, let’s just use the term then), successively. I did in Percy Jackson series, and look how miserable, redundant and utter mess it was. But for my reading pace, I like it this way. Writing, not much.

Rose is still training to be Lissa’s guardian and still head over heals with her trainer Dimitri. But that’s not the only thing that occupies her mind, there’s impending attack of strigoi and because of that, the academy is surrounded by guardian including her mother – Janine Hathaway. Now she needs to deal with her mother, who when she decided to piss off gave her a black eye instead of typical scolding by a parent.

While Dimitri is the only guy in her mind, lots of boys have her in theirs. There is Mason, who she thinks is her best friend, the one who helped her to clean her not-so-good rep, especially with the rumors spread by Mia. He’s always been there for her, and since Dimitri dismissed the idea of them hooking up, she tried to pay her attention to other boys, and Mason might be the guy… or is he? Because another guy showed up and can’t seem to stop flirting with her, a moroi named Adrian.

I finally met Adrian the guy who knocks VA fangirls off their feet. So how do I find him? He’s interesting. But I’m not quite there, still not prepared to wear my ‘I love Adrian’ shirt. But who knows, I’m starting to like him but I still think Rose is better off with Dimitri. Well, just saying. As I’m typing this I’m three fourths of book there, and he still gave me the same vibe. He’s a bad boy type, not Christian bad, as in bad boy. Alcohol, smoking, flirting. Someone mothers don’t approve to their daughters, the type where father tossed them out of their house and out of their daughter’s lives. Yep, that kind. Needless, to say, just like Christian he’s a misunderstood type, he’s still not that visible in book two so I’m still not part of the fan group. And there’s still nothing remarkable so far, that deserves my attention to that level.

The story is ok, a lot better than first one. There’s a lot of make out session, and it’s not even Rose, ugh, like her I don’t really like peeking through Christian and Lissa’s explicit escapades. I think it was unnecessary, well that’s just me. I’m a person who like subtlety, and this is nowhere near that. Also, Rose is a little less annoying here. The flirting has dropped a little, and I kinda like spunkiness she has whenever she talks with Adrian. And she kicked ass here, literally. She got her first kill, two in fact. Though I was kinda sad about what happen to Mason. But he’ll be back in another form in book three (I said I’m three fourths of book three, right). So that, I know.

The second book is lot clearer, and I like it gave focus on the relationship of Rose and her mother. I know that raising a child on her own is hard but still, she still owes Rose the time they never had. Rose on the other hand, no matter how fragile their relationship is she should still respect her. She is still her mother. I also approved the prologue gave a bit of the background of what happened in the first book, as well as the details we readers needed. I’m a fast reader, so sometimes, often if not, that I missed some little details. And I like it pointed straight in a manner that was easy to absorb. Overall, good. Still 3.5 but it started to raise the bar, even for a bit. If it’s only possible to rate it 3.75 that would be it.
